For thousands of years the I Ching has provided guidance for decisions about our health, relationships, finances, work, and play. Predictions from the I Ching follow the lunar year and are based on multiple, overlapping cycles that govern the heavens and earth. A variety of stems, branches, directions, and phases also have their say, each creating a trail of portents, probabilities, and possibilities, so let us begin…
April follows the spring equinox; the hours of daylight are getting longer, and the temperature is growing warmer. Earth energy supports and takes loving care of us in this season of birth and growth; April is represented by the Chinese character Chén 辰 which means “awakening.” The Qing Ming Pure Brightness Festival on April 4 is the traditional day for Chinese to honor their ancestors, for farmers to begin plowing, and for couples to begin courting.
The Qing Ming festival has special significance in Chinese tea culture because it is the date that divides the harvest of green tea. Tea leaves picked before the holiday are given the prestigious “pre-Qing Ming” designation; they are said to be lighter and have a lovely subtle aroma, so they command a much higher price tag than tea picked after the festival.
In April, many of us will observe Easter and the end of Passover, the beginning of Ramadan, Earth Day, and Arbor Day. On April 22 over 1 billion people representing nearly every country on earth will participate in some sort of activity on Earth Day ranging from picking up litter to pledging to support green businesses, shopping local, or planting a spring vegetable garden. It may be a coincidence, but it also happens that Earth Day occurs during the month with the strongest Earth Element energy of the year.
You must be curious to know what the I Ching reveals about your element this month—so check out interesting tips and forecasts about your emotions, relationships, health, career, and finances for April. Here’s to spring and here’s to April!
Constipation plagues some Metal people because your element is reluctant to “let go,” so mix up a “to-go” smoothie first thing every morning. Here’s a recipe: a cup of crushed ice, six pitted prunes, a cup of unfiltered organic apple juice, a cup of Kefir or plain yogurt, and a pinch of cinnamon. Place ice in the blender followed by everything else, then blend well. Poop, poop-a-doop!
Metal people are world-class critics. Your critical thinking is a hard habit to break but when you recognize then stop the mean voice in your head from yakking, you’ll have more compassion for your own foibles and the foibles of others. To train your brain to stop thinking mean thoughts, put a fat rubber band around your wrist and give it a snap every time you think something mean.
You can’t have a good relationship with others until you have a good understanding of yourself. Enjoy accomplishments; some people are so focused on everything that is wrong with people that they never take a look at what’s right. It’s all too easy to indulge in mentally making over your friends or partner; accept them the way they are and accept yourself in that way too!
Create good financial karma: carry around a little extra change and feed someone’s meter if you see it running low. Give nicer tips to servers than usual. Send a gift card along with thanks to someone who has helped you. The basic understanding of how karma works is, “what goes around comes around” or “as you sow, so shall you reap,” since doing good creates a positive effect.
It is useful to apply a bit of feng shui theory to make certain your workspace is conducive to doing your best work. You are most comfortable in a minimal and modern environment with hard surfaces and shiny finishes. Channel your inner Marie Kondo since you are happiest when everything around you is neat and tidy—it helps you think clearly and allows your energy to flourish.
