For thousands of years the I Ching has provided guidance for decisions about our health, relationships, finances, work, and play. A variety of stems, branches, directions, and phases also have their say, each creating a trail of portents, probabilities, and possibilities, so let us begin…
April follows the spring equinox; the hours of daylight are getting longer, and the temperature is growing warmer. Earth energy supports and takes loving care of us in this season of birth and growth; April is represented by the Chinese character Chén 辰 which means “awakening.” The Qing Ming Pure Brightness Festival on April 4 is the traditional day for Chinese to honor their ancestors, for farmers to begin plowing, and for couples to begin courting.
The Qing Ming festival has special significance in Chinese tea culture because it is the date that divides the harvest of green tea. Tea leaves picked before the holiday are given the prestigious “pre-Qing Ming” designation; they are said to be lighter and have a lovely subtle aroma, so they command a much higher price tag than tea picked after the festival.
In April, many of us will observe Easter and the end of Passover, the beginning of Ramadan, Earth Day, and Arbor Day. On April 22 over 1 billion people representing nearly every country on earth will participate in some sort of activity on Earth Day ranging from picking up litter to pledging to support green businesses, shopping local, or planting a spring vegetable garden. It may be a coincidence, but it also happens that Earth Day occurs during the month with the strongest Earth Element energy of the year.
