For thousands of years, the I Ching has guided decisions about our health, relationships, financial matters, work, and play. Predictions from the I Ching follow the lunar year and are based on multiple, overlapping cycles that govern the heavens and the earth. A variety of stems, branches, directions, and phases also have their say, each creating a trail of clues and possibilities, so let us begin …
In the western calendar it is 2019, but in the Chinese lunar calendar, February is the first month of the year 4717. Even though the western calendar is used for business purposes in Asia, the lunar calendar is still used for determining traditional holidays and for choosing the most opportune dates for significant events like weddings, moving, or starting a new business.
China’s most important event in February is the lunar New Year which begins on the 5th. Families gather from all over the globe to rejoice and celebrate a new beginning in the largest annual transmigration of human beings on earth. Homes are cleaned from top to bottom, banners are hung, feasts are planned, firecrackers crackle, and dragons dance in week-long revelry.
2019 is an Earth Pig year in the Chinese horoscope. Children born this year are happy, easygoing, and sensible. Earth Pigs are orderly; ambitious but not competitive; and make wise decisions about money. Earth Pigs are also party people―they appreciate good food, drink, and an active social life, that leads some of them to excess.
We in the west are also going to be busy. In February we will observe Black History Month and President’s Day, and celebrate National Wear Red Day in support of women’s heart health. We will watch the Super Bowl, the Grammys and Academy Awards, enjoy Chinese New Year festivities, chow down on National Pizza Day and last, but not least … happy Valentine’s Day!
February’s robust Wood Element energy will provide us with an abundance of forward-moving momentum that can help kick off endless possibilities. In this brand-new lunar year we can look forward to exciting developments and opportunities that we can explore, so happy New Year everyone!
Water is the softest, most yin Element of them all. Yin energy is deep, dark, dormant, resting, and receptive. It is important for you to cultivate your essence, your life-root, your jing. Without rest, the earth could not renew itself in the spring and likewise, without quiet and introspection, you would not be able to gather your energy and allow your powerful creativity to burst forth.
Water energy is heavy and naturally tends to go down or sink; and that is the reason that sometimes you feel sad, inflexible, or become stuck. You can keep your energy strong with meditation, practicing tai chi or chi gong, or participating in regular exercise … then your spirit will soar and you will be able to do what you do best, which is to inspire and guide the rest of us.
You are likely to be a dreamer; a reflective, deep thinker. You are a born teacher, leader, and visionary. It would be helpful for you to cultivate opportunities to share your wisdom with others, but at the same time, it is important that you do not seem aggressive or pushy. You will learn from experience when it is time for you to offer advice, and when it is time for you to retreat.
Our human bodies are actually a part of our wealth, and so is being a responsible steward of our planet. With the help of your powerful Water energy and clear access to your spirituality, it is possible for you to figure out how to manifest the fulfillment of your dreams—dreams that can benefit you, your family and friends, your community, and even perhaps even the world at large. Wow!
