For thousands of years the I Ching has provided guidance for decisions about our health, relationships, finances, work, and play. Predictions from the I Ching follow the lunar year and are based on multiple, overlapping cycles that govern the heavens and earth. A variety of stems, branches, directions, and phases also have their say, each creating a trail of portents, probabilities, and possibilities, so let us begin…
In the Chinese horoscope, June occurs in a phase called wǔ 午, a time of maximum powerful, hot, male yang Fire Element energy. It is no surprise that the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, occurs in a heated Fire Element month like June. Dragons, the Fire Element, and the solstice are all related―they embody activity, brightness, sunshine, daylight, and heat―all of which are apt descriptions of wǔ.
If you live near a lake or the ocean, be on the lookout for dragon boat races; they are fun and exciting to watch! In China, the Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu, is an important three-day holiday that begins on the 12th. Dragon boat racing is a 2,000 year old tradition; in Chinese culture the dragon represents good fortune—it is the strongest, the most yang, of all the animals in the Chinese horoscope.
Before the festival begins, parents prepare colorful silk pouches strung on silk threads that are filled with herbs. During the festival, the pouches are hung around kids’ necks or tied to their garments as a charm to protect them from evil. Steamed rice dumplings, or zongzi, are a traditional Dragon Festival food that is filled with meat, or red beans, and wrapped in bamboo leaves.
In the west, Father’s Day and the summer solstice both arrive on the 20th. June’s luxuriant Fire influence is a constructive, creative, and positive force that creates many possibilities for development and success. Remember however that excessive Fire can also burn and consume, so we must do our best to channel this powerful energy wisely. In the meantime, be on the lookout for interesting new possibilities—who knows what exciting things could happen!
We hope that because of all the constructive energy that is heading our way, the world is beginning its recovery from Covid. Give your dad a big hug on Father’s Day and check out what this month’s horoscope has to say about your upcoming health, emotions, relationships, career, and finances.
Your energy is cool; it neutralizes the heat of this month’s Fire so you are ready to take on a challenge. Water people have a strong, hidden reservoir of power along with a touch of aggression so that the martial arts could be right up your alley. If aggressive sports are a little too scary, give tai chi a chance … it has its roots in martial arts, with an overlay of structure and control.
Water people sometimes push back from pressure by doing nothing as a means of resistance. Try subscribing to what the Chinese call wu wei, or the natural way. Practicing wu wei means allowing yourself to be open to new possibilities rather than resisting demands that are placed on you. Being open to change could even turn out to be kind of fun, so give it a try!
Water people can be a bit shy and reluctant to enter into small talk, especially with people they don’t know, but relationships are built on communication. We’re all feeling a little shy as we are coming out of isolation following Covid, but it’s going to be even harder for you. Start practicing now, so that when the pandemic lifts, your personal community can rebuild itself around you.
During Covid, we consumed enough plastic to bury us all. Do your part and stop using bottled water. Be an example for the health of our planet and fill your reusable bottle with water you filtered yourself. When you take care of the health of Mother Earth, you are also taking care of your own finances, since all that water bottled in plastic is expensive in every sense of the word.
June’s hot, ripening Fire energy could bring you some opportunities that you have never considered. It’s strange, but sometimes the worst we could ever have imagined can open new pathways that we could never have expected. Water people know how to go with the flow, so keep your eyes open because this new post-pandemic era could bring new opportunities your way.
