It is no surprise that the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, occurs in a Fire Element month like June. Dragons, the Fire Element, and the solstice are all related―they embody activity, brightness, sunshine, daylight, and heat, all apt descriptions of .

If you happen to live near a lake or the ocean, be on the lookout for dragon boat races; they are fun and exciting to watch! In China, the Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu, is an important three-day holiday that begins on June 3rd. Dragon boat racing is a 2,000-year-old tradition; in Chinese culture, a dragon represents good fortune—it is the strongest, the luckiest, and the most yang of all the animals in the Chinese horoscope.

Before the festival begins, parents prepare fragrant herb-filled silk pouches strung on silken threads. During the festival, the pouches are hung around children’s necks or tied to their garments as a charm to protect them against evil. Steamed rice dumplings, or zongzi, are a traditional Dragon Festival food; they are filled with meat or red beans and wrapped in bamboo leaves.

In the west, both Father’s Day and Juneteenth be celebrated on the 19th. Juneteenth is believed to be the oldest African-American festival; it is a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth,” and honors the emancipation of enslaved peoples and dates back to 1866 in many parts of the US.

This year summer officially begins with the solstice on June 21st. June’s luxuriant Fire influence is a constructive, creative, and positive force that creates many possibilities for development and success. Remember, however, that excessive Fire can also burn and consume, so we must do our best to channel this powerful energy wisely. June's high yang fire energy opposes your element, so watch out for over-stimulation of your adrenals, the glands in the Water energy network that produce stress hormones. These hormones can cause inflammation and functional bodily breakdown, so boost your qi or life force energy by decreasing salt and increasing the amount of fluids that you drink, especially when it’s hot outside.


Emotional Health

There may be an increase in external sources of pressure or expectations in a yang Fire month which could engender resistance and/or inaction on your part. Rather than getting stuck, cultivate what Chinese Taoist spirituality describes as wu wei, or flowing with the natural way. Allow yourself to be open to possibilities rather than resisting every demand placed on you. 


Relationship Health

You tend to withdraw from the expectations of others, but work on acceptance and letting go of your fears. Use the demands of others as a way to practice strengthening your resolve and do your best to avoid making knee-jerk reactions. Circumvent emotional waterfalls by enjoying quiet chats with friends and family; share your dreams so that others can assist you on your journey.


Financial Health

You may find that you are worried about your finances spinning out of control this month because excessive Fire energy is also spinning around you. You may be fearful that you are missing out on opportunities or losing momentum. Still, you can overcome your natural caution by educating and enlightening yourself to be more comfortable with the decisions that must be made.


Career Health

Challenge yourself to explore this month; allow yourself to daydream about a life path that could be more meaningful than the one you are currently on. Set aside some time to enjoy the performing arts, vis interesting exhibits, try new recipes, and take a walk somewhere you’ve never been before.
