For thousands of years, the I Ching has provided guidance for decisions about our health, relationships, financial matters, work, and play. Predictions from the I Ching follow the lunar year and are based on multiple, overlapping cycles that govern the heavens and earth. A variety of stems, branches, directions, and phases also have their say, each creating a trail of portents, probabilities, and possibilities… so let us begin.

March is a month of transition, as winter slides into spring. Hooray! In China, Jīng Zhé or The End of Hibernation and Waking of Insects will be observed on the 5th. March 9th ushers in the joyful Purim festival in the Jewish calendar, Daylight Saving Time begins for many on March 8th, St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on the 17th, followed by the spring equinox a few days later.

The equinox marks new beginnings in many cultures. On this day, when night and day are equal, Chinese tradition calls for balancing eggs on their ends to ensure luck and prosperity. Iran, India, and Turkey observe their new year, Japanese families visit their home towns to spend time to remember their ancestors, and Stonehenge is open to visitors and local Druids alike.

In the Chinese horoscope, March receives a strong push from the Wood Element. All this vigorous energy propels opportunities our way, but it is up to us to seize and take advantage of them. The Wood Element will soon reach the end of its yearly cycle, so in order to maximize the possibilities that Wood energy reveals, we will need to keep the momentum moving forward.
