The Season of Clarity and Refinement

September brings a noticeable change in rhythm. Summer still lingers, but the light is changing, mornings are cooler, and nature has begun turning from the outward expansion of summer toward the more inward movement of autumn.

In Chinese astrology, September is Ding Yo (丁酉) month—Yin Fire over Metal—within the Bing Wu Fire Horse year.

This is quite different from August’s Bing Shen. Bing Fire is like the sun—hot, expansive and outward. Ding Fire is more like a candle or lantern, illuminating what is close at hand and helping us notice what we may have overlooked. Yo is the Metal element, associated with precision, discernment, order, and refinement. Together, they provide September a clear message: look carefully at what deserves your energy.

After the considerable activity of this Fire Horse year, this is a good time to review what is working and what needs adjustment. Finish what deserves to be completed, simplify what has become unnecessarily complicated, and give more attention to what matters and less to what merely keeps you busy.

From Summer Fire to Autumn Metal

Chinese medicine teaches us to change with the seasons. Summer belongs to Fire and maximum Yang. On the other hand, autumn belongs to Metal, when nature begins to contract and conserve.

Our bodies feel this transition as well. Sleep may shift, skin and throat can become drier, allergies may return, and the sustained activity of summer can begin to show up as fatigue.

Begin adjusting now. Go to bed a little earlier, balance vigorous exercise with walking, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Dao-In. As temperatures cool, gradually favor more cooked vegetables, soups, mushrooms, squash, root vegetables, pears, and apples.

Autumn corresponds with the Lungs and Large Intestine, so September is also an important month for strengthening Lung function and Wei Qi, our protective energy. If you tend toward fall allergies, sinus problems, coughs, or respiratory infections, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Start your care with acupuncture and Chinese medicine now. Breathe deeply, stay hydrated, spend time indoors, and begin your seasonal cultivation now.

Refine, Don’t Perfect

Ding Fire helps us see details, while Yo Metal recognizes what could be improved. This makes September an excellent time to organize, edit, complete projects, review finances, and clear physical and mental clutter.

A word of caution—watch out for perfectionism. There will always be something that could be better. Refinement becomes unhealthy when discernment turns into constant criticism of ourselves or others.

The Taoist approach is simpler: improve what needs improvement, accept what does not need changing, and release what has fulfilled its purpose.

Autumn teaches us this principle beautifully. A tree does not struggle to hold onto every leaf; instead, it preserves what is essential and lets the rest return to the earth.

We can do the same with possessions, obligations, habits, resentments, and expectations that have outlived their usefulness.

Metal is also associated with grief. If old memories or emotions surface this month, give them room rather than immediately pushing them away. Meditation, journaling, walking in nature, the Element Harmonizing, and Gratitude practices can help emotions move naturally. Grief reminds us that something mattered, while gratitude reminds us why we cared.

Finding September’s Balance

The Autumn Equinox later this month offers another reminder as day and night briefly approach balance. Ask yourself whether you are spending more energy than you restore. Is work leaving enough room for sleep, health, family, and cultivation? Are you constantly taking in information without allowing the mind enough quiet time and space to process it?

September is the time to begin gathering Qi after summer’s expansion.

Each of the Five Elements will experience this differently. Wood wants to prune and focus. Fire turns intensity into steady illumination. Earth must nourish itself while supporting others. Metal gains clarity but must avoid excessive criticism. Water receives support for reflection and purposeful action.

September’s astrological advice

See clearly, choose carefully, and let go appropriately. Knowing when to expand and when to refine helps preserve our Qi and directs our energy toward what truly matters.

That is one of the simplest ways to live in harmony with the season—and to continue living younger, longer, and stronger.

Live younger, longer, and stronger.
