Dr. Mao's October 2026 Guide to Health, Longevity & Chinese Astrology
Returning to Solid Groud
October brings us more fully into autumn. The expansive energy of summer has receded, daylight is shortening, and nature is directing its resources inward. What was growing only a few months ago is now being harvested, stored, or returned to the earth.
In Chinese astrology, October moves into the Wu Xu (戊戌) month—Yang Earth over Earth—within the Bing Wu Fire Horse year. This is a substantial change from September’s Yin Fire. Wu is Yang Earth—solid, dependable, and steady, like a mountain. Xu is also Earth. Together, they give October a strong, double Earth quality.
After the movement and intensity of this Fire Horse year, October encourages us to become more grounded. This does not mean becoming inactive. Earth is capable of tremendous productivity, but its strength comes from stability rather than speed. October favors completing what has been started, strengthening foundations, taking responsibility for what matters, and conserving resources for the months ahead.
The Center Becomes Important
In Chinese medicine, Earth corresponds with the Spleen and Stomach, which transform food into Qi and Blood. When Earth is healthy, digestion is strong, energy is steady, and we feel centered. When it becomes burdened, we may experience bloating, heaviness, fatigue, cravings, brain fog, or excessive worry.
October’s strong Earth can therefore be either nourishing or excessive. This is not the month for complicated diets or extremes. Favor warm, simply prepared foods: soups and stews, squash, sweet potatoes, root vegetables, mushrooms, whole grains as appropriate, cooked greens, and adequate protein. Eat regularly and give your digestion time to do its work.
As the weather becomes cooler and drier, continue supporting the Lungs and Large Intestine, the organs of autumn. Pears, apples, sesame, daikon, mushrooms, and adequate fluids can help counter seasonal dryness. There is wisdom in eating with the season, as our bodies are part of nature, not separate from it.
When Too Much Stability Becomes Stagnation
Earth gives us reliability, loyalty, and the ability to remain steady when circumstances become uncertain. The Earth adds another quality of protection. We may feel more concerned with family, home, security, fairness, and the people or principles we care about.
While these are admirable qualities, too much focus on Earth-centric attributes can be heavy. Responsibility can become worry, loyalty can become obligation, and stability can become resistance to change. We may continue carrying something simply because we have carried it for a long time.
The astrological energy of October encourages us to distinguish between being dependable and becoming burdened. If you are responsible for many people, make sure you are also taking care of yourself. If your schedule is full, leave some space between commitments. If a problem cannot be solved today, permit yourself to put it down until tomorrow. Your mind, like the digestive system, also needs time to process.
Gathering Rather Than Expanding
The seasonal movement is increasingly Yin now. This is a good time to bring unfinished matters toward completion and strengthen what already supports your life. It is a good time to review your health routines, organize your home, and attend to finances and practical matters you have postponed.
Return to your healthy routines, such as meditation, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Dao-In, if summer disrupted your practice. Spend more time preparing nourishing meals and less time eating on the run. The energetics of October are a time of consolidation over expansion.
That principle applies to our energy as well. The 2026 Fire Horse year has encouraged movement, but we do not need to maintain the same pace throughout every season. Healthy longevity depends upon knowing when to expend energy—Qi and when to gather it.
The Five Elements will each experience Wu Earth and Xu Earth differently. Wood encounters strong Earth and must keep growth flexible without becoming frustrated by slower conditions. Fire produces Earth and needs to avoid giving away more energy than it restores. Earth is strongly reinforced and benefits from stability while guarding against heaviness and overthinking. Earth nourishes metal and can use October to organize, complete, and prepare. Water encounters Earth’s controlling influence and must protect its reserves while remaining adaptable.
We will explore each of these dynamics through physical health, mental and emotional health, relationships, purpose and career, and financial health, with practical recommendations for living more harmoniously with the month.
In summary, October’s lesson is: Strengthen what supports you, lighten what burdens you, and prepare for what lies ahead. A mountain does not need to hurry to demonstrate its strength, and sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stand firmly where we are, gather our Qi, and make sure the ground beneath us is sound before taking the next step. That is the wisdom of October.
Live younger, longer, and stronger.
